Why?
My father is a hobbyist who enjoys anything involving RC planes. His growing collection of planes quickly made the issue of space a concern. To tackle this problem, he presented me with a challenge: design a structure that could optimize his space while safely storing his planes.
First Steps:
The first thing I did was brainstorm ways to maximize the given space. It soon became apparent that there was a significant amount of vertical space that was underutilized. As a result, I came up with the idea of making a structure allowing for vertical stacking of the planes. This freed up space in the basement for his other collectables.
Design Process
I began the actual project by designing everything in Fusion 360. I did this to maximize the space requirements and restrictions, as well as to create a parts list before purchasing the necessary components. I did this to avoid wasting money and materials.
Assembly
The time I spent during the brainstorming and drafting process allowed for the project to come together quickly. The assembly process itself was extremely straightforward due to the blueprint I created during the design process.
Final Thoughts
From brainstorming to actually assembling the organizer, I found this project to be very enjoyable. Not only was it less challenging compared to some of my previous undertakings, but it also provided a valuable opportunity to design something that met someone else's specific requirements. Drafting and creating this project with my dad was the best part of the process for me. It was a great bonding opportunity that will forever live in my memories.
